You can even go costless by planting different herbs in a corner in your garden or backyard. They can be potted and you can have them as decoration in your kitchen window, as most of them can be grown indoors. Then when you want to use them, you can just pick a leaf or two.

You can add flavor to your ordinary dish through special culinary herbs thus making an ordinary into a special one. If you are not yet very familiar in using the culinary herbs, it is best if you first try to understand their different flavors and benefits. It is only through adequate knowledge of these that you can enrich whatever foods are created.

There are many different culinary herbs and let us start with the three herbs that are commonly used, namely: basil, parsley and oregano.

Basil – This has a spicy aroma. There are different kinds of basil and this alone is one lesson a user of basil needs to explore. The most commonly used flavorful kinds are the sweet and purple basil. However, one guide to the use of basil is its inclusion in various tomato-based recipes. Pesto will not be “pesto sauce” without sweet basil. You can use basil in fresh and dried forms.

Parsley – This is one culinary herb that has a mild taste. It is non-obtrusive and is commonly used fresh. As it blends well with the flavor of other herbs like mint, basil or oregano, parsley is one culinary herb that is easy to use. There are some chefs who love to add dried parsley in the preparation of sauce. Parsley is decorative as this is usually found on top of salads and other dishes – as garnishing.

Oregano – This is sometimes referred to as wild marjoram. It can be used fresh or dried. It has a warm aromatic flavor. The best use of oregano is in flavoring chicken, meat, fish and vegetable recipes. Oregano is a great seasoning for Mexican, Greek and Italian recipes.

There are countless kinds of culinary herbs as there are too many of the medicinal as well. As you keep checking my blog, I will from time to time give you tips on both the culinary and medicinal properties of the grasses which most probably grow neglected in your backyard.
